IABF’s 60 Seconds: IABF Law Firm Participated in Cyber Crime Webinar: Understanding Threats, Regulations, and Mitigation Strategies

On 15 April 2026, IABF Law Firm participated in a webinar titled “Cyber Crime 101: Understanding Types of Digital Attacks, Case Studies, Mitigation, and Legal Solutions” organized by Ikatan Alumni Fakultas Hukum Universitas Indonesia (ILUNI FHUI). The webinar also featured Mr. Tuaman Manurung, S.H., M.H., CLA., Cmed, as the Head of the Regulatory Drafting Sub-Team for Digital Space Supervision at the Ministry of Communication and Digital of the Republic of Indonesia (Kementerian Komunikasi dan Digital Republik Indonesia), and Mr. Erikman Pardamean, S.E., S.Kom, CISA, IIAP, Associate CISO, CC, ERMCP, GRCA, GRCP, QIA, QRMP, IDPP, Technology Risk Consulting Partner at RSM Indonesia and Chapter Secretary at ISACA Indonesia.

During the discussion, IABF Law Firm began by highlighting the rapid evolution of cybercrime, which has become an integral part of economic activities, social interactions, and public services. This digital transformation has been accompanied by the increasing prevalence of cybercrime, characterized by its borderless nature, anonymity, and growing complexity. These risks are largely driven by weak cybersecurity systems, low levels of digital literacy, and the continuously evolving tactics of cybercriminals.

IABF Law Firm further elaborated on the common types of cybercrime, including hacking, identity theft, phishing, malware, card skimming, and web forgery. Each of these was explained not only in terms of modus operandi but also in relation to the applicable legal framework in Indonesia, including the Electronic Information and Transactions Law, the Personal Data Protection Law, the New Indonesian Criminal Code, and other relevant sectoral regulations.

In addition, IABF Law Firm emphasized the importance of mitigation measures from both corporate and individual perspectives. From a corporate standpoint, key strategies include strengthening cybersecurity infrastructure, establishing incident response teams, appointing a Data Protection Officer (DPO), obtaining cyber insurance, and ensuring robust technology agreements such as SaaS contracts. From an individual perspective, digital awareness remains essential, this includes avoiding the use of a single password for all access codes, safeguarding personal data, and remaining vigilant against cyber-attacks.

IABF Law Firm also addressed the issue of liability, particularly in the banking sector, by distinguishing between losses caused by system failures and those arising from user negligence. This distinction is crucial in determining the appropriate legal remedies available to victims.

The discussion also included real case studies of cross-border cybercrime, which illustrated the complexity of such cases, including multi-jurisdictional elements, evidentiary challenges, and the critical need for coordination among stakeholders and authorities. These cases further underscored those preventive measures, such as robust systems and strict verification processes, remain the most effective way to minimize potential losses.

The webinar concluded that cybercrime has become the most significant global threats, and this trend is anticipated to continue in the future. It was noted that the human element remains the weakest link exploited by cybercriminals. Therefore, both corporations and individuals must exercise heightened vigilance and proactively develop comprehensive strategies to protect their assets, data, and legal interests. Strengthening cybersecurity measures, enhancing awareness, and ensuring regulatory compliance are no longer optional, but essential in navigating an increasingly complex and high-risk digital landscape.

In the webinar, IABF Law Firm was represented by speakers Dr. Binoto Nadapdap, S.H., M.H., Anugerah Hans Pebrinaldy, S.H., and Kaiji Natanael Pangihutan, S.H. The session was moderated by Almaida Askandar, S.H., MBA, a partner at the firm who originally proposed this important topic.
